| Notes for Caleb CARVER | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| First cousin to wife Lydia. Their Carver lineage is the same from their grandparents back. Source: Darlene McNamee Genealogical and Family History of Maine, George Thomas Little, 1909 The Carver Family of New England, Clifford Nickels Carver, 1935 A Brief Historical Sketch of the Town of Vinalhaven From its Earliest Known Settlement, Prepared by order of the Town, on the occasion of its One Hundredth Anniversary, 1889, 1900; Reproduced in 1986 by The Vinalhaven Historical Society, Inc., p. 50, "The North Island": "Caleb Carver was among the first to come here, and his lot, containing about 200 acres, was located in the northeast part of town. His business was principally farming." Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 3, Maine Genealogical Society Special Publication No.11, Ruth Gray, ed., Joseph Crook Anderson II, Associate Ed., Picton Press, Camden, Maine: "Carver, Caleb, 32b, 1-1-4-0-0 [1790 US Census, Vinalhaven, Hancock County, Maine: Caleb Carver household had one male over age 16, one male under age 16 [that would be Wills], and four females of all ages in the household. Looked up on microfilm in 1970s; now have Mr Sids in file.] Vinalhaven Town, Hancock County "CALEB CARVER, b Marshfield MA 1762 son of Capt Caleb & Abigail (Damon) Carver (VR): d prob at St. Andrews or St. John, N.B. (William Jones, "Robert Carver of Marshfield MA," NEHGR 89 [1935]: 35): m c 1783 Lydia Carver, b Vinalhaven 5 Jan 1767 dau of Israel & Margaret (Sherman) Carver (ibid.). Caleb moved to South Fox Island, now Vinalhaven, c 1778." [Unable to tell if editors mean this Caleb, or his father - Capt. Caleb Carver - who was in Canada, as was Caleb's brother, Melzar, after being proscribed and banished on the Massachusetts Banishment Act of 1778. Capt. Caleb Carver and his wife, Abigail (Damon) probably died at Springfield, Kings County, New Brunswick, where Capt. Caleb's will was made on 14 May 1798. Maine Families in 1790 is the only reference that implies this Caleb Carver was ever in Canada for any reason, although on maps of Maine and New Brunswick it seems like it would be an easy voyage up the St. Lawrence from Vinalhaven, Maine, to New Brunswick so it's possible Caleb and Lydia at least visited his father and mother in New Brunswick. Nothing I've seen explains why, or if, they moved to Canada before their deaths, however. It seems more likely someone got Capt. Caleb and his son, Caleb, mixed up, since further US Census data lists this Caleb & household in Vinalhaven, Maine.] 1800 US Census; Vinalhaven: Caleb Carver household had two males under ten years of age; one male of ten and under sixteen years of age; one male of twenty-five and under forty five years of age; two females under ten years of age; one female of ten and under sixteen years of age; one female of sixteen and under twenty five years of age; and one female of twenty-five and under forty-five years of age. In column heading "From whence emigrated, it says "Marshfield." [US Census data from when I looked it up on microfilm in 1970s; Mr Sids in file.] 1810 US Census; Vinalhaven: Caleb Carver household had three males under ten years of age; two males of ten and under sixteen years of age; one male of sixteen and under twenty-six years of age; one male of forty-five years of age and upwards; three females under ten years of age; one female of ten and under sixteen years of age; two females of sixteen and under twenty six years of age; and two females of twenty-six and under forty-five years of age. [US Census data from when I looked it up on microfilm in 1970s; Mr Sids in file.] Vital Records of Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine Prior To 1892, Elizabeth M. Mosher, Ed., Picton Press, Rockport, Maine, 1994, p.17. ["Record of the births of Mr. Caleb Carver's Children begun ye May 17th, 1810"] Names and birth dates of Caleb and Lydia's children all from this book, with the exception that Clifford Nickels Carver added the name of Sarah, who died in 1813, age 2 years. 1820 US Census Index, Vinalhaven (not in file) 1830 US Census; Vinalhaven Caleb Carver household had one male of fifteen and under twenty years of age; one male of twenty and under thirty years of age; and one male of sixty and under seventy years of age; one female of twenty and under thirty years of age; and one female of thirty and under forty years of age. 1840 US Census; Vinalhaven Caleb and Lydia are not listed. My best guess is that they both died between 1830--1840.... likely in Maine.... (Census data has them in Maine.... I have no reason to believe they emigrated to Canada when they were elderly by standards of the day....) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
