			ZoneAlarm free firewall software can protect your computer from intrusion by controlling which programs access network and online resources. It also works to keep hackers and malicious "backdoor" programs from entering your system. The paid version also protects against certain types of e-mail attachments and provides extra information about intrusion attempts.
			LavaSoft Ad-Aware Standard is free software that scans for - and removes - "spyware" and "adware" that clutters your computer, monitors your activities and steals your information.
			Security Basics: Don't reply to unwanted e-mail. Don't click "Remove" links, as they often do quite the opposite. Learn how to use your e-mail software - it may contain filters to help you eliminate junk mail. I've written several articles regarding junk mail, computer viruses and "spyware" software.
			Install up-to-date antivirus software. Keep it up-to-date. Most anti-virus companies offer free updates to their products. Use these weekly to defend your computer against the ever-growing number of virus threats.
			Keep other people away from your computer. After all, it's YOUR computer. Many of the computers I repair are overloaded with seemingly innocent "junk" software installed by friends and relatives. Limit the access to your computer, and you'll be less likely to lose control of it.
			If you use Windows 98 and above, download critical software updates here. Check for updates at least monthly. By keeping your system up-to-date, you increase your level of protection against attacks on security vulnerabilities.
