The Fish - At The Ranch

Yes - I put the Fish in the Paws & Fur section, even though they're

hairless, aquatic creatures... Bite me.

The Fish of Lougee Lake

Sunfish. These fish gather near our dock and nest in the weeds within 50 feet of shoreline. I catch sunfish using a combination of baits, most generally worms, corn and chicken parts. Because we feed them occasionally, sunfish make swimming interesting.

Bass. I generally catch bass when I'm fishing for sunfish. I've found that for whatever reason, bass prefer to bite on smaller hooks than one would think to use. If it looks like a good hook for catching minnows, it'll work great for bass.

Northern. I have never caught a real northern. The picture at the left is slightly larger than any northern I've pulled out of Lougee.

Crappie. I don't like crappies. They eat like a mealy apple or instant mashed potatoes... But, since I make a couple bucks a year, it's okay if I put the crappies back. Maybe someone less fortunate than me might enjoy eating a mashed-potato fish.

Bullhead. I could write a whole page on this shit! A whiskered fish that you clean by driving a nail through the head and peeling the skin off like a sock!?! These unique fish strike later in the evening after the northern have eaten all of the sunfish.

Steve's Fish-Serving Tips:

Sunfish and Crappies go well with beer. Hell, what doesn't?

I wouldn't know what goes good with Northern! Probably beer?

Bullhead is best served with plenty of hard liquor, to help take the edge off.

Morey's smoked salmon is excellent with cheese, crackers and a strong beer.

Tuna does NOT belong in macaroni and cheese.

I can't hold down the same plate of oysters more than three times...

Eating fish raw, on the boat, as a dare, when you're really drunk - bad idea.

Hamburgers or Bratwurst taste really good after a long day of fishing!
