The Starship MIDI Library
This barely scratches the surface... I'd need a lot more space!
Most people know what MP3 (MPEG Layer III) files are. But MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) tunes are created with synthesizers and special computer equipment (and someone who knows how to use both) and are not simply ripped from a CD. Like the MOD files of long ago, MIDI has been around since the 1980's, and shows no sign of going away anytime soon. The collection below is quite small - but a good sampling of different styles and sounds.
Because MIDI music is recorded by people of differing musical backgrounds and using different quality synthesizers (think of Casio vs. Korg for instance) the songs created can range from almost unrecognizable to extremely lifelike. Compare the Alice In Chains' "Man in the Box" song with Styx' "Come Sail Away" for a fantastic example of a half-hearted attempt at a song, and a good-quality reproduction of the real thing. To enjoy MIDI files the way they were meant to be heard, you need a good-quality sound card in your computer, as well as good-quality speakers.
MIDI files are playable with Windows Media Player or an alternate (better) media player such as WinAMP. Need something else? Use a search engine online to look for "MIDI Player" for you particular operating system.
