Security Basics: Don't reply to unwanted e-mail. Don't click "Remove" links, as they often do quite the opposite. Learn how to use your e-mail software - it may contain filters to help you eliminate junk mail. I've written several articles regarding junk mail, computer viruses and "spyware" software.Install up-to-date antivirus software. Keep it up-to-date. Most anti-virus companies offer free updates to their products. Use these weekly to defend your computer against the ever-growing number of virus threats. Keep other people away from your computer. After all, it's YOUR computer. Many of the computers I repair are overloaded with seemingly innocent "junk" software installed by friends and relatives. Limit the access to your computer, and you'll be less likely to lose control of it. If you use Windows 98 and above, download critical software updates here. Check for updates at least monthly. By keeping your system up-to-date, you increase your level of protection against attacks on security vulnerabilities. |

Disclaimer:
I personally use - and recommend - all of the programs listed on this page. None of these programs are designed for "Novice" computer users as they require a general knowledge of Windows, common sense and the ability to make decisions. There is a high likelihood that if your computer fails to operate correctly after installing or using any of these programs, it's not so much "bad software" but because you're basically stupid. I know that sounds harsh, but every Friday I celebrate another week of solving problems for people who shouldn't own computers in the first place. I'm not saying that everyone is a moron - I'm just saying that for every five people who call me and can carry on a normal conversation, there are at least fifty more who have their head jammed so far up their ass... Well, let's just say I hope you're one of those lucky five or so. If so, there shouldn't be any trouble using any of these programs - in fact, you'll probably get great results. But if in the unlikely event you got a computer instead of a sweater for Christmas one year, then I take absolutely no responsibility whatsoever for any horrible things you may do to it.
