Teaching:  Gift of Interpretation of Tongues   1 Corinthians 12

Tongues for the church body require interpretation (explanation; translation):
natural or supernatural.

NATURAL:
Day of Pentecost: “each one heard them speaking in his own language.” Acts 2:6
1920s: Esther Snobeck heard tongues in perfect Norwegian – that confirmed in her the reality of speaking in tongues.

SUPERNATURAL: Gift of the Holy Spirit
If there is not an interpreter (explainer, translator), the speaker must pray for the interpretation–or keep quiet.

2 Peter 1:20-21
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation.  For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Origen [180-262 A.D.]: “If the one who speaks in tongues does not have the power to interpret them, others will not understand, but he will know what he was moved by the Spirit to say.  When this is understood by others as well, there will be fruit from it.  Here as elsewhere, we are taught to seek the common good of the church.”

Teaching:  Gift of Tongues:   1 Corinthians 12

Matthew 3:11 (Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16)
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Mark 16:17  And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
Acts 1:7-8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;

Tongues are demonstrated in three distinct ways:
- Initial Evidence of Filling of Holy Spirit
- Personal edification
- Corporate edification as long as there is interpretation

INITIAL EVIDENCE of being baptized with the power and fire of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:4  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Acts 10:46;  Acts 19:6-7   How did the early church recognize that an individual was baptized with the power of the Holy Spirit? The common answer is tongues.

PERSONAL EDIFICATION – Communication at the spirit level
1 Cor 14:2  For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.
1 Cor 14:4  He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself,
1 Cor 14:14  For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

CORPORATE EDIFICATION – Communication at the church level
1 Cor 14:13  For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.
1 Cor 14:22  Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers;
1 Cor 14:27-28  If anyone speaks in a tongue, two-or at the most three-should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.  If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.

Are Tongues for today?
Why does the Bible say tongues will cease?  (1 Corinthians 13:8)
It also says prophecy and knowledge will cease–and they will–when we are face to face with God in the eternal state and no longer look through a darkened glass.  Then we will see the things of eternity clearly.
But I have heard that Tongues are just for the Apostles and the early church–before the New Testament was written.  Chrysostom [347-407 A.D.] and Ambriosiaster [about 366 A.D.] and others explain Paul’s teaching as if Tongues were still in operation.
Joel’s promise was the spirit to sons and daughter and all mankind. (Joel 2:28-29)

WHO can receive the Gift of Tongues?
1 Cor 14:5  I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,
1 Cor 14:39  and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

Teaching Gift of distinguishing between spirits - 1 Corinthians 12

Why is a supernatural gift of this type needed?  Hitler is obviously evil; Mother Teresa and Billy Graham are obviously good.  And you will know them by their fruit, anyway?  We have wisdom, knowledge, and prophecy–why more?  Prophecy is the first gift that Paul suggests everyone should seek–it also has “false prophet” potential clearly explained in the Old and New Testament.  Since WE are to judge the prophecies, what standard can we use that is not just human wisdom? Do we not need supernatural judgment ability from God?

ONE: We must distinguish between spirits.
 JEROBOAM’s visiting prophet: 1 Kings 13 (an old prophet lied)
 Prophet MICAIAH: 1 Kings 22 and 2 Chron 18 ( a lot of prophets lied)

TWO: We must distinguish between the sacred and the profane
“Discern” and “distinguish” are tied with knowing between good and evil; the holy and the common; being pure and blameless;  preparing the bride of Christ.

Ezek 22:26  Her priests do violence to my law and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common; they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean; and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.

THREE: We must choose the holy to see the fire of God and live
 NADAB and ABUHU:  Leviticus 9 & 10 (They did not chose the holy--they saw the fire of God and it killed them.)

FOUR:  We must be obedient to the holy
Phil 1:9-11 ...discern what is best and may be pure and blameless....
John 14:23-24    Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.  He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

1 Cor 2:14-15  The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith, Healing, Mighty Miracles, Prophecy, Distinguishing between spirits:  1-2-3-4-5-6-7
Purpose of Wisdom is to preach the foolishness of God (crucifixion) with power–How? By laying on of hands.
Purpose of Knowledge is strength to wage war:  intelligence information-- How? By listening to instruction.
Purpose of Faith is to move destroying mountains–How? By the awakening of the word of Christ through music.
Purpose of Healing is to show that Jesus has authority to forgive sins–How? By touch, speaking in the name of Jesus.
Purpose of Mighty Miracles is the testimony of God the Father to salvation–How? By honoring Jesus with worship.
Purpose of Prophecy is to be the eyes of the church– How? You must have an eager desire.

Teaching:  Gift of Prophecy: 1 Corinthians 12
Foretelling or forth-telling?  What does that mean?
YET--This is what we have been taught.
 WHERE IS THE SUPERNATURAL?
Prophecy:  Revealing the plans of God:  What He is going to do;  what He is doing;  what He has done.

Amos 3:7  Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.

1 Corinthians 14
-- Prophesy rather than tongues– “for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.” [14:3]
-- Prophesy for conviction– “But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!" [14:24-25]
-- Prophecies should be weighed by others– “ Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. [14:29]
-- ALL may prophesy-- “And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop.  For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.  The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. [14:30-32]
– ALL should be eager for the Gift of Prophecy.

Numbers 11: prophesying in the camp;
Deut 13, 18: false prophets;
1 Sam 19: Saul and the prophets

Experiencing the Gift of Prophecy does not necessarily make one a Prophet [office of Prophet], however, Prophets have the Gift of Prophecy–and a few more things.

Office of Prophet – a servant of the church:
 Usually has to do something–an act of some kind along with the words.
 Usually not liked–wilderness type of person–frequently killed–church doesn’t like him/her.
 Information link and prophetic is “on” all the time.
 His/her very being (existence, action, location, appearance) can be part of the prophecy.
  Consider a few:  Agabus, John the Baptist, Jonah, Moses, Ezekiel, Hosea, Isaiah, Elisha
Matt 10:41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward,...
1 Thess 5:19-22  Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt.  Test everything. Hold on to the good.  Avoid every kind of evil.

The church should never do anything without prophecy: the eyes of the church [Isa 29:10]

Gift of prophecy  --  HOW? Your eager desire–results in dreams, visions, revelations – seeing

Office of prophet  – HOW?  Gift of God, from God, by God: a servant for the church.

Teaching:  Gift of Administration - What is the government structure of the church?

Romans 13:1-7 This is civil government (with a sword), not church government.
   Pray for our government–it is provided by God.

1 Corinthians 12:27-31
Now you are Christ’s body, and each of you a limb or organ of it.  Within our community God has appointed, in the first place apostles, in the second place prophets, thirdly teachers;  then miracle-workers, then those who have gifts of healing, or ability to help others or power to guide them [ kubernesis ], or the gift of ecstatic utterance of various kinds.  Are all apostles? all prophets? all teachers?  Do all work miracles?  Have all gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues of ecstasy?  Can all interpret them? The higher gifts are those you should aim at. [NEB]

Compare list with:   Eph 4:11-13 apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers
   1 Tim 3 overseer [ episkope ], deacon/deaconess [ diakonos ]

kubernesis  (of Latin origin, to steer); pilotage, i.e. (figuratively) directorship (in the church):  KJV - government.
episkope;  inspection (for relief); by implication, superintendence; specially, the Christian "episcopate": KJV - the office of a "bishop", bishoprick, visitation.
diakonos:  an attendant, i.e. (genitive case) a waiter (at table or in other menial duties); specially, a Christian teacher and pastor (technically, a deacon or deaconess): KJV - deacon, minister, servant.

Traditional church hierarchy:
 1. pope (denominational leader), 2. bishop, 3. priest, 4. deacon, 5. the rest of US

Jesus’ hierarchy suggests:
 1. Jesus, 2. US with gifts of Holy Spirit, 3. Servants (deacons):  apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers to equip us (a bishop is a superintendent of deacons–apostle?)

The Gift of Administration seems more than just a natural ability
Grouped with healing and miracle-workers.  That suggests it is a supernatural gift from Holy Spirit.

Some examples of administrator/guides/governors:
 Esther     Esther  Queen of Persia
 Joseph    Gen 41 Administrator/minister/governor of Egypt
 Daniel     Dan 1-2, 6 Administrator/minister/governor of Babylon and Persia

Things in common:
 They were not at home – they had been forcibly removed from where they were; where they lived
 Drafted -- they did not volunteer for their new position of responsibility
 They adapted -- they were good at what they had to do [“For such a time as this” Esther 4:14]
 Two interpreted dreams – all were at extreme risk of being killed because of their dreams

Definitions:
Prov 11:14  For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure.
Prov 20:18 Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.
Prov 24:5-6 A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength;  for waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers.

Why a supernatural, Holy Spirit Gift of Administration?
    For victory in war.
How does one receive the gift?
    Sharing dreams that make you personally at risk as an alien.

REDEEMED
Exodus 34:20  Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem all your firstborn sons. "No one is to appear before me empty-handed.
Leviticus 27:28-29 "'But nothing that a man owns and devotes to the LORD--whether man or animal or family land--may be sold or redeemed; everything so devoted is most holy to the LORD.  "'No person devoted to destruction may be ransomed; he must be put to death.
Deuteronomy 15:15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this command today.

Teaching:  Gifts of the Spirit:  MIGHTY MIRACLES

Heb 2:3-4 This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

What are “mighty works,” “wonderful works,” “power,” “dunamis,” “kaoch”?

Ex 11:9 The LORD had said to Moses, "Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you--so that my wonders may be multiplied in Egypt." [Romans 9:17 & Exodus 9:16]

Ex 15:11-12  "Who among the gods is like you, O LORD?
  Who is like you--majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?   You stretched out your right hand and the earth swallowed them.

Psalm 29 The voice of the Lord is powerful (kaoch).

“Spirit and Power of Elijah” precedes the coming of Jesus - Luke 1:17

Examples: Mary the Mother of Jesus (Luke 1:35)
  Resurrection of Jesus (Acts 4:33)
  Return of Jesus (Luke 21:27)

Mark 6:4-6 Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor." He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their lack of faith. What is Honor?  Praise, thanksgiving, firstfruits, humility, and no strife.

Mark 7:6, Jesus refers to Isaiah:
Is 29:13-14 The Lord says:
  "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.    Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish."

Psalms 50:23 He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God."

HOWEVER:   Matthew 7:22, “Lord, Lord, Have we not...in thy name done many wonderful works?”
This is “wonderful works” without honoring Jesus with worship from the heart–NOT the voice of God.

Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith, Healing, Mighty Miracles:  1-2-3-4-5
Purpose of Wisdom is to preach the foolishness of God (crucifixion) with power–How? By laying on of hands.
Purpose of Knowledge is strength to wage war:  intelligence information-- How? By listening to instruction.
Purpose of Faith is to move destroying mountains–How? By the awakening of the word of Christ through music.
Purpose of Healing is to show that Jesus can forgive sins– How? By touch, speaking in the authority of the name of Jesus.
Purpose of Mighty Miracles is the testimony of God the Father to the coming salvation–How? By HONORING Jesus with WORSHIP from your heart-- beyond just rules.

Which is easier: to say, `Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, `Get up and walk'? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. . . ." Then he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home."

2 Chron 7:15  ...then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Ps 41:4 I said, "O LORD, have mercy on me; heal me, for I have sinned against you."
John 5:14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you."

SINS FORGIVEN AND HEALED.
Ps 38:3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin.
Ps 103:3  Who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
Isa 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

JESUS GAVE INSTRUCTIONS TO DO IT.
James 5:15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
Matthew 10:1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

JESUS GAVE AUTHORITY TO DO IT.  AND HE EXPECTS US TO DO IT.

HOW?  BY TOUCH--BY TOUCH SPEAKING WITH AUTHORITY: IN JESUS’ NAME.
Luke 6:19 Those troubled by evil spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.

Touch is frequently involved in healing:  Jesus–took the hand, his robe was touched, he made mud for the eyes–but he also just spoke the word.  WE NOW HAVE THAT AUTHORITY.

Matt 16:19-20 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
John 20:22-23 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith, Healing:  1-2-3-4
Purpose of Wisdom is to preach the foolishness of God (crucifixion) with power--by laying on of hands.
Purpose of Knowledge is for strength to wage war:  intelligence information-- by listening to instruction.
Purpose of Faith is to move destroying mountains (the spirit that is Babylon)–by the awakening of the word of Christ through wisdom, knowledge, and music?
Purpose of Healing is to show that Jesus has the authority to forgive sins–by TOUCH (anointing), SPEAKING in the name of Jesus.

Teaching:  Gifts of the Spirit:  Faith
...if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.  2 Tim 2:11-13

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. Hebrews 11:1-2

The Old Testament dominantly is about “broken faith”
 Jesus frequently talked about lack or little faith.
  Hebrews is about the unrealized and the unseen.
   Faith is about:  the FAITH (religion, belief, relationship with God)
    James says put some action to it...

FAITH IS FOR MOVING MOUNTAINS
I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, `Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." Matthew 17:20.
Also in Matthew 21:21-22;  Mark 11:22-25; 1 Corinthians 13:1-2

CONTEXT:
Isaiah 40:4  Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low;
Jeremiah 51:24-26 "I am against you, O DESTROYING MOUNTAIN, you who destroy the whole earth,"

THE EXAMPLE OF FAITH IS MARRIAGE--A FAITHFUL MARRIAGE.
When Christ returns, will he find anyone faithful.  Christ is returning for His bride.
 Judah has broken faith...   Malachi 2:11-16
 We have broken faith–we have little faith–we can’t move mountains.

HOW DO WE GET THE GIFT OF FAITH?
Like marriage:  Leave your father and mother.
 Like marriage:  The two become one: flesh and spirit
  Like marriage:  The couple are faithful to each other:  “Faithful” in marriage is faith.

Romans 10:17  We conclude that faith is awakened by the message, the message that awakens it comes through the word of Christ. (NEB)
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

Song of Solomon (Songs of Songs) is the love relationship between a man and a woman.
It also shows the relationship between the Son of God and His bride.
“I will sing the song of all songs to Solomon that he may smother me with kisses.”

Teaching:  Gift of the Holy Spirit--WORD OF KNOWLEDGE
We fallen humans have knowledge that is good and knowledge that is evil.
We have knowledge that is naturally available to us:  Romans 1:18-20
LOOK AT WHAT GOD HAS MADE –humans design and build from God’s knowledge
We even have spiritual knowledge:  2 Peter 1:1-11, Titus 1:1-2

BUT, HUMANS HAVE SUBSTITUTED SOMETHING ELSE
Romans 10:1-3 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.
Luke 11:52 Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering."
Isa 56:10 Israel's watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge;
they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep.

Knowledge of Balaam: Numbers 22-24  God cared about what was said.
Num 24:15-16 Then he uttered his oracle:  "The oracle of Balaam son of Beor, the oracle of one whose eye sees clearly, the oracle of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:

What we have been taught:
 “The Word of Knowledge is the revelation of facts, undiscoverable through natural processes.”

Jesse Norwood:
The divine purpose of the gift [of knowledge] includes the following:
To warn a king of an enemy's plan of destruction (2 Kings 6:9-12).
To enlighten and encourage a discouraged servant of the Lord (1 Kings 19:14-18).
To expose a hypocrite (2 Kings 5:20-27).
To convince a sinner of the need of a Savior (John 4:18-19, 29).
To discover a man in hiding (1 Samuel 10:22).
To indicate a man in need (Acts 9:11).
To reveal corruption in the Church (Acts 5:3).
—BUT TO WHAT END?

KNOWLEDGE AND “WORDS THAT CREATE” ARE RELATED
By knowledge, God spoke everything into existence.
Romans 11:33-34 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!  "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?"

Hab 2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

Dan 2:21 He changes times and seasons;  he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

Jer 10:12-16 same as 51:15-19
But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. His images are a fraud; they have no breath in them. They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish. He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the tribe of his inheritance--the LORD Almighty is his name.

Isa 33:6 He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.

Prov 30:2-6 "I am the most ignorant of men; I do not have a man's understanding. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son? Tell me if you know! "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

By the the WORD OF KNOWLEDGE, “ASK ANYTHING IN MY NAME” starts to make sense.
2 Cor 10:3-6 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

2 Cor 2:14-17 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?

Col 1:9-12 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

Col 3:9-10 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Wisdom comes from laying on of hands (Moses to Joshua); KNOWLEDGE COMES FROM HEARING INSTRUCTION AND SCRIPTURE–it makes us open, prepares us, for the supernatural knowledge the Holy Spirit wants to “gift” to us.

Knowledge from Solomon
Proverbs 2:1-5 My son, if you accept my words ... then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.

Proverbs 5:1-2 My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge.

Proverbs 19:27 Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

Proverbs 21:11 When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge.

Proverbs 22:12 The eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge, but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.

Proverbs 23:12 Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.

Proverbs 24:3-4 By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.

Proverbs 24:5-6 A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength;  for waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers.

WORD OF KNOWLEDGE IS FOR WHAT END?
– Strength for waging war -  (2 Cor 10:3-6)

When we have the supernatural Word of Knowledge, we can speak those WORDS into existence--
in spiritual warfare.

Deut 34:9  Joshua ... was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him.
1 Kings 2:8-9  You are a man of wisdom; you will know what to do to him. Bring his gray head down to the grave in blood."
Ezra 7:25 ...wisdom of your God, which you possess, appoint magistrates and judges to administer justice to all the people of Trans-Euphrates-all who know the laws of your God. And you are to teach any who do not know them.

SOLOMON:
2 Chron 1:10  Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people...
1 Kings 3:28  When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.
1 Kings 10:23-24  King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth.  The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.
Matt 12:42  The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.

James 1:5  If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Gift of wisdom results in the ability FOR EACH OF US to talk and teach the foolishness of God with power.

Teaching:  Mom and Wisdom

Prov 10:1 A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother.
Prov 15:20 A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.
Prov 29:15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.

Prov 31:1-9 The sayings of King Lemuel--an oracle his mother taught him:
"O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows,   do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings.
"It is not for kings, O Lemuel--not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what the law decrees, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish; let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.
"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

 Gen 3:6  When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.
 2 Cor 11:3  But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

Rahab – an example of faith/an act of righteousness  – The Great, Great Grand Mother of Solomon
Matthew 1:5-6  Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, ...
 Joshua 6:25  But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho-and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
 Heb 11:31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.
 James 2:25-3:1 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

The beginning of the church was at Pentecost (May 27 this year–50 days after the Passover).
 Jesus said to the church to wait for POWER:   Luke 24:49; Acts 1:7-8
 All were filled with the Holy Spirit:  Acts 2:1-13
 Peter’s text:  Joel 2:28-32

RESULTS:  Acts 4:32-35
All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.  With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.  There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.

PURPOSE:  1 Cor 12:7-13
 COMMON GOOD
 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
 A UNIT OF MANY PARTS
 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free-and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
 While it is TODAY:  Heb 3:12-19

PRECEDENCE: Number 11
 God shared the spirit of Moses with the 70
 Demonstrated by prophesying.
 Moses said something like, “I wish everybody had that spirit.”

SPIRIT OF THE LORD CAME UPON... and then what happened?
 Judges 3:10;  Judges 6:33-35;   Judges 11:29-31;
 Judges 14:5-6;  Judges 14:19;  Judges 15:14-15

Baptism of Fire–being filled with the Spirit--is not just:
 So you can talk in tongues and be blessed–and impress the body.
 So you can do miracles in the name of Jesus–and have a TV show.
 So you can jump up and down and sing praise songs–and have tingly’s in your spine.
 So you can fall down in the Spirit and cry–and talk very spiritually about your experience.
 So you can see strange things and hear voices–and be perceived as being mystical.

THE BAPTISM OF FIRE IS TO PREPARE YOU FOR WAR: SPIRITUAL WARFARE.
“BAPTISM IN POWER” IS NOT JUST FOR AN EMOTIONAL GOOD-TIME AT CHURCH.

Why should Jesus prepare you for war if you are a spiritual pacifist? You won’t fight?
Armor is for battle, not church fashion. “I have the Gift of...” is for warfare, not religious medals or decorations.  They are not Miss Church sashes, trophies on the mantle, or first-place ribbons from God.

BESIDES:  Unused and unexercised weapons rust.  How RUSTY, CRUSTY, DUSTY, MUSTY are you?

Teaching:  John 3:1-21– Meeting with Nicodemus

Nicodemus QUESTIONED Jesus--
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."

TRUTH ONE
In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."
"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"

TRUTH TWO
Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.  Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.  You should not be surprised at my saying, `You must be born again.'

 Adam died in the Garden of Eden–but the Spirit gives life.

The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
"How can this be?" Nicodemus asked.

TRUTH THREE
"You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven-the Son of Man.  Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. [Numbers 21:8-9]

But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

 Luke 24:12  Peter–NOW WHAT?

Women talked to Him – NOW WHAT?
 John 20:18  Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.  What things?  20:17

The disciples saw Him alive and were chastised about their lack of belief – NOW WHAT?
 Evening –first day of the week
 John 20:21-23  Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

Doubting Thomas, one week later, saw, talked to, and touched the Lord alive–NOW WHAT?
 John 20:29  Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Peter wanted to return to his old career–the familiar–he went fishing.
 Jesus appeared to his disciples by the sea.  The third time
  Throw your net on the right side...Unlimited fish–miraculous fishing (153)
   Fish and bread - Jesus broke bread with the disciples again
    fish and bread–like the miracle of the loaves and fishes

John 21:15--BUT, Peter is reinstated as an apostle  – NOW WHAT?
 Three times Peter denied Jesus.
 Three times Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him.

With a dead Christ, a risen Christ, a restored apostle, and as witnesses of it all – NOW WHAT?
 Luke 24:45-49   Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

 Acts 1:7-8  He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

NOW WHAT?  We are to give our hearts and lives to Christ, be filled with the Spirit and witness.

Teaching:  John 20 – He is not here, but He is.

Imagine trying to guard against the resurrection--the supernatural.
We as fallen humans tend to not want a resurrection in us, in our family, amongst our friends, in our town, and definitely not in our church.  At least that is what it seems by how we act and what we do.
We are ready to accept death.  The stages of grief have been defined–and expected–no-one must violate those “laws” without having severe consequences.  Jesus had definitely been crucified.

GUARDS CAN’T KEEP JESUS DEAD
The religious leaders who knowingly killed the Son of God believed He would rise again–and placed guards to prevent it.  Matt 27:64
 Religious leaders don’t want resurrections–it messes up their programs and their cemeteries
 It messes up their power structure and their doctrines:  John 11:47-48
 It takes the spotlight off of them:  John 12:19
 You just can’t have a Lazarus walking around and maintain control:  John 12:10-11

Therefore, religion will guard against a resurrection–and may even lie about it.  Matt 28:12-15
Evidence?
 Look at the negative reports surrounding revivals in various parts of the world.
 Look at the number of churches and preachers who claim miracles and the supernatural were only in the days of the Apostles until the Bible was done. “We must guard against miracles today.”

Besides, this Jesus was the wrong Messiah:  wrong family, wrong town, wrong followers, wrong agenda.
For the local resurrection–spiritual renewal--will we be considered: the wrong family, wrong denomination, wrong town, wrong program, wrong music, wrong doctrine, wrong pastor, wrong elders, or even the wrong Jesus?

DISCIPLES NOT BELIEVING CAN’T KEEP JESUS DEAD
The disciples left Him for dead. They were scattered.  They ran. They were afraid.
 Jesus told them He would rise again:  Matt 17:9; Mark 9:9-10; Luke 24:46; John 2:20-22
 Jesus used a parable about a rich man wanting someone raised to preach:  Luke 16:30-31
 Jesus told them they would raise the dead–they didn’t even try:  Matt 10:5-8
 Jesus showed them how to raise the dead–they didn’t try: John 12:1,9
 Joseph found a tomb for Him and quickly put Him in it: Luke 23:50

WOMEN PREPARING BURIAL SPICES CAN’T KEEP JESUS DEAD
The women planned on Him being dead: Mark 16:1;  Luke 23:56, 24:1
 They prepared spices; they were going to prepare the body “correctly” for death.

REJECTING THE EVIDENCE CAN’T KEEP JESUS DEAD
Even when the body was gone and the tomb was empty
 They had to be told - angel told them:  Matt 28:7, Luke 24:5-6
 They had to be told again - women told them: Luke 24: 9-11
 They had to be told yet again - Road to Emmaus seminar: Luke 24:13
 They had to be told and shown even more  - Jesus appeared to them several more times

He is alive in spite of everything people desired, thought, hoped for, didn’t believe in, and lied about.

And, we can be alive in spite of our self–JUST BELIEVE– accept resurrection in your life.

Teaching:  John 18 – Men betrayed their own convictions

Palm Sunday starts with the children shouting HOSANNA!:  Matthew 21:15-16
 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant.
 "Do you hear what these children are saying?" they asked him.
 "Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read, "`From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise'?" [Psalm 8:2]

BUT MEN...BETRAY HIM

Judas betrayed Him - yielded to Satan and money
 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. [John 18:2-3]

  Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. [Luke 22:2-6]

Peter betrayed Him - yielded to social pressure
 "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter.   He replied, "I am not."  John 18:17 (and 25

High priest betrayed Him - yielded to the Jews - religious pressure
 "If I said something wrong," Jesus replied, "testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?" Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest. [John 18:23-24]

Pilate betrayed Him–he had no case against Him - yielded to political pressure
 "What is truth?" Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him. But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release `the king of the Jews'?" [John 18:38-39]

The crowd betrayed Him – they would rather have a known criminal than the King of the Jews
 They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion. [John 18:40]

The chief priests betrayed Him – with full knowledge of the prophets, and they reject Him
 "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked.  "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. [John 19:15]

What will cause you to betray Him?
Satan?  Money?  Politics?  Religion? The Masses? Or just a little girl with an accusing voice?
Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly. [Matthew 26:75]

April 7, 2001
1.  The Passover commemorated God’s deliverance from the tenth plague and Egypt. The Passover taught redemption. It pointed to the Messiah as our passover lamb whose blood would be shed for our sins. Jesus was crucified on the day of preparation for the Passover, at the same time that the lambs were being slaughtered for the Passover meal that evening.  “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”  John 1:29  Whose lamb?  God’s lamb.

April 8-15, 2001
2. The Feast of Unleavened Bread was a seven day festival that began the day after the Passover.  Unleavened Bread taught separation from the past to a new life with the Lord and pointed to the Messiah's sinless life, making Him the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Jesus' body was in the grave during the first days of this feast, like a kernel of wheat planted and waiting to burst forth as the bread of life. His body did not experience decay.  Jesus is the bread of life–without sin.  John 6:51

April 15, 2001 (?)
3. The First fruits occurred one day after Unleavened Bread began. Israel offered the first part of the grain harvest (barley) to the Lord. (Lev 23.9-14).  Jesus was resurrected on this day, which is one of the reasons that Paul refers to him in I Corinthians 15:20 as the "first fruits from the dead."

4. Pentecost was the second great annual feast. It was also called the Feast of Harvest (Ex 23.16 with 34.22) and "the day of first fruits" . Israel observed Pentecost seven weeks plus 1 day (50 days, Pentecost) after the wave offering of the barley sheaf during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Pentecost pointed to the great harvest of souls, both Jew and Gentile, that would come into the kingdom of God during the Church Age. Two loaves of leavened bread were offered. The Church was established on this day when the Messiah poured out the Holy Spirit and 3,000 souls responded to Peter's first proclamation of the Gospel.

5. Trumpets occurred in the fall. It marked the beginning of the civil year. Israel blew trumpets on the first day of every month, but this trumpet blast was on the first day of the seventh religious month or first of the civil month. Trumpets starts at the new moon–no man knows the day nor hour–it required witnesses that it was a new moon.  Trumpets blew–fires were lit on hills announcing it. It was celebrated for two days in case it was missed. Jewish tradition:  Books are opened--book of life, book of death, book of the in-between.
Trumpets points to the Rapture when the Messiah will appear in the heavens as a Bridegroom coming for His bride, the Church (I Thessalonians 4:13-18 and I Corinthians 15:50-56)

Thu. 27 September 2001          Yom Kippur
6. The Day of Atonement was the most important annual festival. The high priest entered the holy of holies. The scapegoat was sent into the wilderness signifying the sending away of the people’s sins. Some say Atonement points to the day of the Second Coming of Jesus when He will return and judge the earth. (Zechariah 12:10 and Romans 11:1-6, 25-36).

Tue.  2 October 2001    Sukkot
7.  The Feast of Booths or Tabernacles was the third great annual feast. The name comes from the fact that Israel was to live seven days in temporary  booths that they made out of boughs.  Tabernacles points to the Lord's promise that He will once again tabernacle with His people when He returns to reign over all the world from Jerusalem (Micah 4:1-7).

Teaching:  Jesus in the Tabernacle – Exodus 26-30

Tent/tabernacle and furnishings were designed by God (Exodus 25:8-9, 30, 40)
Are the tabernacle and furnishings a parable or a pattern of the soul of man?

We are now “tents” (2 Cor 5:1-5 and 2 Peter 1:13-14)

CONSIDER:  Are we the “Tent” that Jesus comes into?  Is our soul like a tent?
 Outside the tent:   Altar of sacrifice; Water of Cleansing
 Inside the tent: Lampstand; Table of Shewbread; Golden Altar of incense
 Behind the curtain: Holy of Holies--where God wants to be


Without the work of the high priest, the Tabernacle implements and furniture are nothing – but they still exist in Tabernacle, but without God.
Without God, we humans are an empty shell with a table that needs the bread of life, a lampstand that needs oil and fire, and an altar that needs incense and sacrificed blood anointing, and the Law of God separated from us without anything on the mercy seat.

When Jesus comes “into our heart”, He comes into our “Tent,” our “Tabernacle.”  We are “born again.” Our soul becomes spiritually alive.  God is there.

1. There is a sacrifice that has to be made on the bronze altar (Exodus 27:1-8)

 Jesus brought Himself as the sacrifice as the High Priest (Hebrews 7:27)


2. The tent is not entered without cleansing (Exodus 30:17-21)

 Living Water; the washing water of Christ – signified by water baptism (John 4:10)


3. Inside the tent is the table for shewbread (Exodus 25:23-30)

 Jesus-the bread of life (“This is my body...”); Communion–one loaf (1 Cor 10:17)


4. Inside the tent is the lampstand (Exodus 25:31-39)

 Jesus baptizes with fire; the light of the Holy Spirit in us.  (Matt 3:11)


5. Inside the tent is the Golden Altar where incense is burning (Exodus 30:1-6)

 Prayer of the saints morning and night (Revelation 8:3-4)
 The horns of the altar receive the blood anointing from the high-priest (Ex 29:12)


6. Jesus tore the curtain separating us from God–the Holy of Holies (Matt 27:51)

 His blood is on the mercy seat which covers the ark of the covenant–the law


When God was in the Tabernacle, a cloud of smoke and fire surrounded it; and the light of glory was inside.  When we have God in us, we look different–we glow.

Teaching:  Jesus: the Plagues in Egypt

The plagues or wonders are judgment on all the gods of Egypt. (Exodus 12:12)
1. Water in the Nile turned to blood (Exodus 7:20-25)
The Nile is considered the source of life for Egypt; great god Hapi.  Blood was considered abhorrent.  And their own magicians turned more water into more blood.
Jesus is Living Water:  John 4:10
2. Frogs (Exodus 8:6-7)
Heka is the toad goddess of resurrection and procreative power.
Jesus is the resurrection and the life:  John 11:25
3. Gnats (kinnim) from dust (Ex 8:16-19)
This was an attack on Geb who was "god" of the earth or vegetation.  The magicians could not duplicate this wonder and declared it to be the "finger of God"
Jesus drove out demons by the Finger of God: Luke 11:20
4. Flies (Exodus 8:20-32)
This was an attack on Khepfi, scarab, who was the "god" of insects. The plague of beetle, a scarab, was an emblem of Re (Ra), the sun god. Hebrews kept from the plague by God: distinction.
Jesus said, "For many are invited, but few are chosen.": Matt 22:14
5. Plagues on livestock (Exodus 9:1-7)
This was an attack on Apis, who was the bull "god."  The lion, wolf, dog, cat, ape, and goat were very sacred to them; but especially the ox, heifer, and ram (Khnum).  Pharoah decided when this "wonder" would stop.  Hebrew sacrifices would be very offensive.
Jesus entered by his own blood: Heb 9:12
6. Boils caused by soot (Exodus 9:10-12)
An attack on Thoth (Imhotep), who is the "god" of medicine and intelligence/ wisdom. The Egyptians had several medical deities, to whom, on special occasions, they sacrificed humans. They were burnt alive on a high altar, and their ashes were cast into the air.
Jesus healed those who needed healing: Luke 9:11
7.   Lightning and hail (Exodus 9:13-35)
An attack on Nut, who was the sky "goddess," for this was harvest time, the time of plenty.
Jesus controls the wind and the waves: Mark 4:39-40
8. Locusts (Exodus 10:1-20)
An attack on Anubis,  the "god" of the fields, especially cemeteries. Locusts devoured everything.
John the Baptist ate locusts and prepared the way for Jesus:  Matthew 3:4
9. Darkness for three days (Exodus 10:21-29)
This was an attack on Ra or Amon-Re, the sun "god." Darkness was considered a creation of Seth, evil principle destroyer of Osiris. The darkness could be felt!  At the same time that the Egyptians had darkness, the Israelites had light.
Jesus--people living in darkness have seen a great light:  Matt 4:16
10. Loss of firstborn (Exodus 11-12)
This was an attack on Pharaoh, who was the "god-king."  Pharaoh was considered an incarnation of Ra, the sun god, and Osiris, the giver of life. Because Pharaoh's son was considered a god so a god of Egypt actually died.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,"  JESUS:  John 3:16

Teaching:  Jesus' Words in Luke after the resurrection–Luke 24

Jesus expects us to wait for Power to do some things.  Others, He expects us to just do.

1. Why not believe all that the prophets have said?
"What are you discussing together as you walk along?"
"What things?" he asked.

"How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!  Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"

 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.

2. Why not believe everything the prophets have said?
"Peace be with you."

"Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?  Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have."

 "Do you have anything here to eat?"

 "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."

 "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  You are witnesses of these things.  I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

Teaching:  Jesus' Words in Luke 21:  When will these things happen?

They claim, ‘The time is near.' Do not follow them.  If not then, then when is the time?

• Not wars
• Not nation against nation
• Not earthquakes, famines, and pestilence
• Not fearful events
• Not great signs from heaven
There will be Persecution
  You will be Betrayed by relatives and friends
     All men will hate you.
       On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.
          Men will faint with terror
             Celestial powers will be shaken

This "generation" will see it all.

What is baptism for the dead?

2 MACCABEES 12:41-46 Therefore they praised the work of the Lord, the just judge, who reveals what is hidden; and, turning to prayer, they asked that this sin might be entirely blotted out.  The noble Judas called on the people to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened to the fallen because of their sin.  He levied a contribution from each man, and sent the total of two thousand silver drachmas to Jerusalem for a sin-offering-a fit and proper act in which he took due account of the resurrection.  For if he had not been expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been foolish and superfluous to pray for the dead. But since he had in view the wonderful reward reserved for those who die a godly death, his purpose was a holy and pious one.  And this was why he offered an atoning sacrifice to free the dead from their sin.

If the dead require "final purification," then the work of grace of Jesus is incomplete.  If money can work as suggested by 2 Maccabees, then righteousness is NOT a gift from God and is a product of works--purchased works--by someone who did not commit the sin.

Punishment is coming–THERE IS A LAKE OF FIRE

God says, "I am Sick and Tired of your Sacrifices" [Isaiah 1:11-17]
God says, "Do you call that a fast?  Do you call that humbling?" [Isaiah 58:1-3]

Why has God not noticed your fast?  [Isaiah 58:3-5]
You do as you please
Exploit your workers
Quarreling and strife
Strike each other with wicked fists
Only a day?-- a day lying on sackcloth and ashes–
  IT'S A SHOW

What does God want as a fast? [Isaiah 58: 6-9]
Loose the chains of injustice.
Free the oppressed
Feed the hungry with your own food
Shelter the wanderer
Clothe the naked
Do not turn away from your own flesh and blood

If you do away with..... [Isaiah 58:9]
Yoke of oppression
Pointing finger
Malicious talk
If you spend yourselves.... [Isaiah 58:9]
in behalf of the hungry
satisfy the needs of the oppressed
If you keep the Sabbath,...[Isaiah 58:13]

THEN YOU WILL FIND YOUR JOY IN THE LORD [Isaiah 58:14]

What does that JOY from a fast look like?
    Your light will break forth like dawn.
    Your healing will quickly appear.
    You will cry for help and He will say, "Here am I."
    The Lord will guide you.
    He will satisfy your needs.
    He will strengthen your frame.
    You will be well-watered.
    You will rebuild your ancient ruins
    You will ride on the heights of the land.
    Feast on Jacob's inheritance
